What Words Are Good For. And Not.
I heard this poet on the radio a few weeks ago. Apparently he is famous, but I hadn't heard of him. But then, I know so little in general about everything in particular. More...

Wiccan Songs
I found a few nice collections of Wiccan Chants recently. The Dance is a nice site itself, and the chant and song lyrics include all the ones I know, and many others. This collection of re-written christmas carols is good too. There are others like it, but this page's songs have beautiful images, they aren't embarrassing (except for a few) and the poetry scans.

Who Built America?
This is one of my favorite history books: Who Built America? is now two CD-ROMs. After payday, I'm going to get these.

Giving the Finger Not as Popular As You Would Think
I came across this site that collects photographs of people giving the bird to Hummers (HumVee sports utility vehicles). I assumed that there would be many sites that collected photographs of people flipping of the things they hate. But I couldn't find any. Can you?

Is Santa Cruz Still Wasting Good Time?
In 2002, I came across this editorial in a local Santa Cruz paper. It was written in 1922. More...

Yacht Harbor Lighthouse
We went for a drive today down the coast to Capitola. It's a nice drive, and on Christmas Day, no traffic at all. Here's a photo of the new lighthouse. More...

Shmuel Thaler, Photographer
When you see a photo by Shmuel Thaler, you know it. His vision is so unique that his photographs are as distinctive in style as any painter's. I happened to find a gallery of his work on-line.

What Christmas Means to Me
In last week's "Letter from America," Alistair Cooke writes that for "unbelievers, agnostics, and atheists" Dickens's A Christmas Carol can be our inspiration for a Ramadan or a Rosh Hashanah of our own, when we reflect on how we're doing, and try to do better. As Scrooge said, "pledge to honour Christmas in my hearts, and try to keep it all the year." Dickens intended for this to happen when he wrote it. While Solstice is a holiday with one set of blessings and meanings, Christmas is quite another. More...

Little, Big
I've been reading Little, Big by John Crowley, and I'm afraid that my fears about it will come true. That after a long time reading it, the end will be a disappointment. I read a few reviews in Amazon (at the link above) and now I'm pretty sure that this is one more late twentieth-century humbug. So that explains why I haven't been blogging lately.

$600,000 in Public Money for Boys' Toys
Well, a unanimous decision by the City Council will pave the path for a skateboard park in my neighborhood. This could be a good thing, but I still don't like spending so much money on a public ammenity that serves only males. I know, I know, "girls skate too." Sure they do. Sure they do. All the time.
I *will* enjoy seeing the closed chainlink fence along the San Lorenzo Dr taken down. And replaced with an open chainlink fence that allows full view of the skaters, prostitutes, and heroin dealers.

A Hope Statistic
In our annual appeal letter from the Resource Center for Non-Violence, we read Bob Fitch saying that
We must remember that after the beginning of the Vietnam war it took six years to get 10% of the nation to oppose it. The Iraq invasion is opposed by 40% of our nation. I believe national and global consciousness is rising, and millions globally are speaking out, becuase of the long-haul community-based education and action that is the content of many groups' work, including the Resource Center for NonViolence.
