Lesbian Coterie Bruhaha Continues
Well, imagine my surprise to read in the Metro's Nuz this week that Don Miller's failed apology for a column about a powerful lesbian coterie at the University of California had led to a meeting of concerned citizens with Sentinel editors. More...

Pogonip Hike
A former Santa Cruzan friend invited me for a walk yesterday. We parked at Spring street, walked down to the old clubhouse, returned to the ridge via the Pogonip Creek trail, then climbed cross country back up to the Spring road. More...

Homebrew Computer Club Anniversary
MacAddict pointed me in the direction of a few good articles published on the occassion of the 30th Anniversary of the Homebrew Computer Club. Atari Archives has the founding-of-Apple story by Woz. CNet has a page of links to videos taken at the recent Anniversary Party. Bruce Dalmer published an exhibit about the party.

Childhood Reading
I came across an essay via Arts and Letters that appears to be a review of a new Norton Anthology of Children's Literature, but mentions several books that aren't collected in it that I'll need to go read now. I think I may have enjoyed this essay more than the anthology which I proabably will never have time to read. Like this paragraph: More...

Being a lover of secrets, I really liked hearing that the buddha's of Korea contain secret treasures and hidden symbols.

Real San Francisco
Gosh I wish Santa Cruz had one of these: a blog capturing posts about San Francisco neighborhood cool stuff. I discovered a podcast about the history and culture of the city, and Mundane Journeys. I signed up to hear about the next bus tour. I also learned about a game called "Guess Where San Francisco" that is played on flickr.com. I don't know the city well enough to play, but it sure would be fun to do it in Santa Cruz.

For months now I've been posting updates on the mysterious mural being painted on the wall of Shopper's Corner. Painting stopped when the rains started, but will continue next year, according to this sign: More...

News Flash: Lesbians Rule UC
Many hours before the Sentinal hit our front porch, we had already received the email: Former UCSC Chancellor MRC Greenwood had resigned her job "to return to teaching." MRC is under investigation over two recent personnel actions, one of "her business partner" Professor Lynda Goff, and the other of MRC's son, James. More...

Early Lesbian Heros
I've seen several links to The Apparent Trap a parody of the Haley Mills classic. I have wordless memories of feeling something very attractive about the story of two girls at camp who grew to love each other and do great and important things.

Dykes to Watch Out For (Blog)
I had no idea, but Alison Bechdel keeps a blog and of course it has the same understated humor as her strip, Dykes to Watch Out For. Hurray! More news from one of my favorite artists.

Meat-Based Life
The other day at work we were discussing a plan that would describe what types of communications are best delivered via email, and which are best delivered when people are in the same room with each other. "Meat-based communications," I said. And everyone sort of looked at me blankly. I realized that I had internalized the classic story by Terry Bisson so deeply that I forgot that few people think of ourselves as talking meat. If you haven't read this, you must. It's quite short.

Magic Words
Earlier this month I went to two concerts in one week; Ferron on a Tuesday and Dar Williams on the Saturday. It was rare to be able to hear the words of these two powerful poets of our time. In the same week, Witchvox carried a great essay on the power of our spoken word: More...

Day of the Dead
I made a little webpage with photographs of my grandmother. She was not a beloved grandmother; she was manipulative and selfish, and threw tantrums her entire life. But she had a life, and I honor it.
