Ruby Slippers of Our Time
The wealthy gay man who donated $152,000 to charity says that Brokeback Mountain props he won at auction are the ruby slipppers of our time. I agree. How sad to think that those two shirts could have just been tossed into a wardrobe warehouse. It's one of the most romantic movie symbols in many years. For example, there are fifty-one "Heart of the Ocean" pendants for sale on ebay right now, and the two shirts, embracing in a closet for twenty years, say a great deal more about enduring love.

Making Sense of Troy
Movies with big battle scenes are still a favorite of mine, ever since "A Bridge Too Far" which I saw in highschool. So I guess that's why I went and rented "Troy" staring Brad Pitt. Despite the reviews, it was unwatchable. Great costumes, but still there was something about how people talked about "the gods" that made me cringe every time. As if they wanted us to know that they didn't believe in the gods, really, but were just playing pagans in the movies. What a waste. But I got curious about Trojans and I searched around. Who were these people? More...

Obscene Clothing
Another reason why I haven't been writing much is because recently I've been watching all the Firefly TV shows. I mused to a fellow fan--we're called Browncoats--that what I'd really like to have is a real browncoat--a duster like Mal wore. The friend turned to the internet and within minutes found this. Nice coat and one I would love to wear--even for the rest of my life, but the price is unspeakable.

Ze Frank is a Genius
...but you knew that if you have visited his site before, full of his movies, his interviews, his dance lessons. Now he has a flower maker, and a garden that you can visit to see other flowers that people have created. And the garden is different every time you grow it. Just what the internet is for. (Checkout the Valentine's Day monologue.)

As Good As It Gets
So me and DV Betty, another lesbian, were having sushi in a restaurant that played Bob Marley, and she was telling me about how she's leading the research into a solar electrical system for her cooperatively-owned trailer park. After dinner, we were planning to join my wife at Kresge College and listen to a lecture by Bettina Aptheker called "The Beauty of Us." I just had to interrupt my friend and ask, "Could we be more Santa Cruz than we are at this moment?
