Vacation Choices
Today is the last day of a mini-vacation spent here at home, in Santa Cruz. While it is true that I ended up doing a lot of chores, I also goofed off alot. Garrison Keillor has something to say in favor of taking a vacation at home. More...

Informal Gardens
Yesterday we went to Sierra Azul and saw more than the war memorial. I've heard of these gardens, but hadn't visited before. Sierra Azul means "blue mountains" of course, and they are visible on their sign, and from the gardens. More...

Sad News
We heard the sad news today that Denise Denton killed herself this morning. I just can't believe it. When I was told, I asked the caller if he were sure this was true and not a hoax. I wanted to believe that the people who are always making fun of her and hating her so much at just played a terrible trick on her--and us. But it is true.

Female Chauvinist Pigs by Ariel Levy
Earlier this week we went to hear a Mellisa Etheridge concert in Oakland. As with most of her shows, she treated us to new interpretations of mostly her old songs, not too many of the new ones where she's happy yet politically aware. While hearing her sing "Bring Me Some Water", I remembered that when we first heard her in the mid-1980s, we thought she must be a lesbian because no woman sings like that about a man. Women may feel that way, but the artists who are allowed to record didn't ever sing about their men that way. More...

Adding my blog to Technorati
I know that by now this is probably not where all the cool kids are, but I finally have a Technorati Profile.

Clay Army
The news tells us today that the first officer has refused to fight in an illegal war. How long until they smear his character? God I hope not. We went to Sierra Azul nursery today to look at sculpture; I didn't know that I would encounter an Iraq War Memorial as well. More...

San Francisco Snaps
I visited San Francisco last weekend with a young person. Both of us had been to SF many times, but never before just to spend the weekend sight-seeing. The first picture I had to take was this SF icon: More...

Hidden Swallows
I don't know about you, but I love the Cliff Swallow. This is the bird that "comes back to Capistrano" as well as everywhere else in California. I knew about their nests under the bridges of the San Lorenzo, because you can see them at dusk swooping and diving and hunting mosquitos. Yesterday I found them on a Santa Cruz icon. More...

Tom Noddy, Bubble Magician
Back in the 80s, there was a brief vaudeville revival and Tom Noddy was part of it. Via Bruce Bratton, I found a clip of Tom's performance on the Tracy Ulman show.

Understatement
I was talking with a friend about Chris Krohn vs. Neal Coonerty and which one might win in Tuesday's election, when I said "Well, it doesn't matter because lots of people think that the Rapture is going to happen on Monday. "What is the 'Rapture'?," my friend asked. So I went into one of my know-it-all raps about how some Christians interpret their scripture to say that there will be a day when all the people who have accepted Jesus as their savior will be saved from seven years of tribulation. More...

All You Need is a Youth Revolution
I walked down to the Civic last night because I thought I might be able to get a few cheap tickets to the Santa Cruz Symphony. The orchestra and the White Album Ensemble were performing works by the Beatles. I didn't see the concert, but I saw something real instead. More...

Creeks of Santa Cruz
While poking around getting prepared for an easement problem, I found a really cool map of all the creeks in Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, the University is omitted. Perhaps these creeks are documented elsewhere.

2012, The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck
When I was in high school I was a born again christian. I was as interested in that religion and understanding its scripture as I have been in anything else I encountered in my life, so you can imagine the intellect that I brought to bible study. So much of what was taught was so obviously unbelievable that eventually the only perspective on christianity I could accept was that of C. S. Lewis and his Mere Christianity. Had I lived in another time, I would have been a Jesuit priest, and certainly a heretic in my heart. More...
