Found Poem
Last weekend, I went to San Francisco to visit a friend. For the first time, I walked to the top of Bernal Heights at sunset. It was glorious. I haven't seen that view before. Even though I had my camera, I didn't take any photos of the view. My camera isn't good for that sort of thing, but anyway, it is really to be lived, not seen in a photo. I recommend taking Folsom street all the way to where it ends at the foot of the hill, then walking up. More...

You know that house across from the Dream Inn on Westcliff, perched there at the end of the trestle bridge? The obituary of an occupant of that house appeared in the Sentinel last weekend. More...

Ferron Again
Last month we went to a Ferron concert at the very intimate Don Quixote's in Felton. Ferron's music is one of the sacred text of my people--if my people are lesbians of a certain age. She sang Testimony, and before she did she told us that the song is 31 years old. Only thirty-one years old. It seems to have been in my life forever. It certainly could live forever. More...

United Cigar
One of the casualties of the 1989 Earthquake was "United Cigar," a store at the north end of Pacific. It had a smell I can almost remember. Yes, it sold cigars and tobacco products-- and men's magazines and fishing gear. Before it was United Cigar, that narrow building was a saloon. Last week, a real photo postcard of the interior of that saloon sold for $200. There was one bidder and he bid three times. Guess he really wanted this card. More...

Mama's Parts
Via Mimi Smartypants: The Zaky Infant Pillow huge hand-shaped pillows that touch your baby when you can't be there. At the bottom, I read this "If you haven’t given birth yet, the Zaky is great to bring to the hospital when your baby is born. Scent it with your own scent beforehand." um. ick.

Small Town Business
Last month there was a mass arrest of the prostitutes in our
neighborhood. I guess they're out of jail now because I saw
one back on the corner. I called the police.

Hulda McLean
The paper brought the sad news that Hulda Hoover McLean died yesterday. I never got to meet her, but anyone who has read her book, Almost 100 Years probably feels that they knew her too. Hulda grew up on her family's ranch at Wadell Creek. It is Hulda who donated it to California so that we all can love it.
