New Cancer Drug
Not only is this a news story about a cure for cancer that seems not only real, but cheap, it tells an interesting tale about the role of mitochondria. I did not know that in addition to providing the energy of living things, they also tell us to die. Who are these mitochondria and where did they come from?

20 Rue Jacob
I'm reading "Wild Heart" a biography of Natalie Clifford Barney by Suzanne Rodriguez. I don't generally read biographies because I'm always so sad at the ending. But where I am now in the book Natalie is in her early 30s, and she has just moved to 20 rue Jacob on the Left Bank where she will live for the rest of her life. Behind the house was a small wooded lot, all that was left of forests which once covered the land where Paris grew, and theTemple of Friendship. More...

Malware Could Send Teacher to Prison
Yet another reason why Windows computers should not be purchased by schools. A substitute teacher is facing 40 years in prison because her malware-ridden computer displayed porn to children. Why is this even being prosecuted? What a nightmare.

Holy Manliness
A few months ago, I enjoyed an article in Harper's about fundamentalist christian churches, and the other day I came across the author's blog, "Call Me Ishmael" (via Hardscrabble Creek, probably). This week, he wrote about the iconography of fundementalist art, and I think he is on to something. His post has the images that weren't able to be included in his story. More...

Another Highlight of MacWorld
I've finally going through my bag of stuff from MacWorld. Here's another highlight "Desktop Poet." Perhaps now I can finally finish my refrigerator poetry magnets Expansion Pack: "The Santa Cruz Edition." I always hated it that those poetry magnets didn't include words I use in my life every day.

Senior Star Trek Analogy Analyst
I don't many if my several readers don't watch The Daily Show, but if you missed the bit with Leonard Nimoy's analysis of Congressman Wu's comparison of White House advisors to science-fiction aliens, well, here's a link.

On that unbelievable ugly netting on the McHenry Staircase
If you have visited the UCSC McHenry Library in the last ten years or so, you probably did not fail to notice a plastic netting wrapped around the bannister on the 4-story spiral staircase. The netting was installed because the gap between each rail of the bannister was large enough for a child of walking age to put their head through. More...

Funny, Creative Lesbians
via AfterEllen I found two new sites. Ruth Selwyn is a filmmaker who creates "Lizzy the Lesbian" cartoons. I have to say, even more than what she says, I like to hear how she says the words. And then there is Your Daily Lesbian Moment.

My Required Photo of iPhone
There were two iPhones at MacWorld. They were hard to see because each pedestel was surrounded by people taking photos of it with their telephones. Here is my photo, taken with my point-n-shoot. More...

MacWorld Highlight
I went to that big computer show in San Francisco last week. The highlight of the show for me was a USB hub by Belkin. The hub contains a few USB ports, a few firewire ports, a fan, and an LED light. But its not the product I liked. It's the ad. More...

Trade offs
A friend of mine had to buy a new car this weekend. Their eight-year-old Volvo's engine died and needed replacing. He opted to buy a new car instead. They bought a hybrid, but aren't completely happy with it. More...
