Not the Slightest Clue
Mark Morford's column today reflecting on love and relationships is worth reading. Even though he's saying "love is complicated and not what you are told it is and you find yourself experiencing love as you never thought you would" no one says it better than he. (I don't agree with him about infidelity though.)

We Are at War
A few of my friends have died recently. And work seems busy without end. And other things in life are changing and change can be hard, even when it is desired. I feel a little low. And, we are at war. More...

Funeral Rites
Yesterday, I attended the viewing and rosary of my friend Tim who died. I brought with me two poems that have comforted me before when friends died. I shared "Dirge Without Music" with someone afterward, and he had never heard it. So here it is in case you haven't either. More...

True Mermaids
Someone showed me the work of M. Alberich Mathews today. The best are in this flickr collection. There are more on the website. I haven't seen how to buy prints. Go look at them right now. You will be amazed.

Another Loss
On Sunday, a friend of mine died. Only 39 years old, he died, suddenly. I called a few friends to tell them. I could not believe I was saying the words: "He died." We, his friends, call each other, and say that we love each other, and say "you better not die." Do we have our finances buttoned up? Would our family be ok? Do we have the other buttoned up? Do we pay attention to them when they are speaking with us? The next minute turns dark, and if I believe he's gone, I would to step off a cliff into blackness. That blackness. What is it? The underworld? The other side of life, that which is just a breath away? That which defines life as surely as the trough defines the peak, the furrow defines the fertile row?

A Few Photos from Florence Lake
Well, I've been back to work two days and my friends are still up there. I've posted a few photos from my trip to Florence Lake. Perhaps you can get a feel for how fun it is to drive the road into there.

Lesbian Gang Bangers
via Alternet, we can see a FOX news clip breathlessly revealing that there is an underground movement of lesbian gangs. LESBIAN GANGS where LESBIANS indoctrinate girls into LESBIAN SEX ACTS! GANGS, GAYS and CHILD RAPE! A trifecta of right-wing fantasies.

Florence Lake Again
This week I'll be camping at Florence Lake. This is my third time I've camped there and there is something special about this place. This time I was able to see the area around the lake with Google Earth. What a cool tool that is. More...

Sal Locatelli
The Sentinel reports today that Sal Locatelli, founder of the firewood company died this week. "Locatelli" is synomous with firewood in Santa Cruz county. I don't know if this is still true, but my story about this company is that you could buy a as little as quarter cord of wood, which, in the early 1990s, was about $25. For people without a lot of money, this was the difference between having heat in your house, or not.

Taking Responsibility
At my work, we talk a lot about roles and responsibilities, stepping up to the plate, and focusing on the "customer." McSweeny's published something that reminds me of why we need to spend so much time on talking about how to do that in real life. Because it is so natural to get it wrong.

Civil Rights is Hard
Here's a flash game anyone can play. You play as a high school principal. You read the banners posted at school events and decide if the sign is something you can suspend the student for, or must tolerate because the student's expression is still protected by the Constitution. Dang. I suspended 7 students in error. I might get sued. A risk we must take, since we're at war. More...

Bandstand
On the 23rd, I was in San Francisco and walking up the panhandle toward the park. We passed this bandstand. I read about it today in boing boing. What BB didn't mention is that the arch of the stage is decorated with what look to be old motherboards. More...
