Why It Matters
All those poor Gay Republicans. Like, say, Condoleezza Rice. Current stories claim that she owns a house with Randy Bean, a documentary film maker with liberal politics. (Rice and Bean?) Yes, I think she is a lesbian--or at least she was when she worked at Stanford because a trusted source told me so. More...

Rants to Watch Out For
Allison Bechdel's blog of all things Dykes to Watch Out for is running a contest. All you need to do is match one of Mo's rants to a political event of the last twenty years. I think I would match "They probably eat veal! They probably don't recycle! They probably have wet dreams about skinnydipping in the Bohemian Grove with George Will!" with "Mo copes with Gay Neocons, " and "In the early days of this movement we weren't shopping for a table! And we sure as hell didn't want a place at the table! We wanted to knock the fricking table over!" with "The Annual Rite of Pride Rolls Around Again." What do you think?

Republican San Diego Mayor Leads the Way
I wasn't going to watch the video of San Diego Mayor explaining why he now supports gay marriage, but I'm glad I did. I wish Hilary or Obama could make the same speech. I wonder if they would cry? Rex Wockner spoke to the mayor's daughter. What is amazing is that he made this speech on the eve of his re-election campaign. Maybe now "leading with your heart" will win elections? Oh, that's just me being optimistic again.

Art Cars
Next Saturday the ArtCar festival begins in Santa Cruz. The festival is 11 years old, but has always been held in San Jose or somewhere else. Which is sad because as far as I'm concerned, ArtCars are rooted in Santa Cruz. More...

D-List Gossip
I first saw Kathy Griffin while dogsitting at a friend who buys premium cable. Her reality show is the only one I could watch since "Real World / San Francisco." And now I find out she's dating Steve Wozniak? I'd never envied Woz before.

If You Have to Ask
An email correspondent mentioned that he wanted to ask me some questions about paganism, and that must of attracted an ad from "Ancient Black Magic Spells." They have immortality on special this month. More...

Science Scouts
Had there been the Science Scouts when I was a science writer, I may have tried harder to stay in that career. I can definitely display the Talking Science badge. If I give it some thought, the MacGyver badge is something I've earned while camping, but maybe I wouldn't have gotten myself into the pickle I found myself in had I not been under the influence. I definitely earned the Inappropriate Nocturnal Use of Lab Equipment in the Name of Alternative Science Experimentation. (What a party that was.) Unfortunately, I earned a Will Gladly Kick Sexual Harasser’s Ass (Level III) if "science" includes networking theory and practice, and I think it does. I earned Level III Has Frozen Stuff Just To See What Happens” --liquid nitrogen is just too much fun to let it sit in the carboy all afternoon. Even so, I'd like to earn I've Set Fire To Stuff and Arts and Crafts.

In Praise of PG Tips
Last winter some worldly friends introduced me to the sacred elixir that is PG Tips tea. I'm in love with black tea all over again. I may have Earl Grey with lemon in the morning, but the magical lift in the afternoon with sugar and milk is just the thing to look forward too about 3:15 in the afternoon. (It's great with Agave syrup too, which I use when I can get it.) There's something very special about this stuff.

How to Understand the Ethics of Outing
Here's a "how to" I never thought about before. And then there's the related "How To's." "How to Come Out to Your Parents," and "How to Perform the Classic 69 Position."

Midwest Teen Sex Show
I started reading a Salon column called "Broadsheet" because I supposed there must be some feminist news there, but nothing turned up in the last few months that I remember except today's link to the Midwest Teen Sex Show. I just watched their first five episodes. Acting, writing, music, humor--they have it all. No wonder hollywood is in trouble. Now everyone with talent can make quality television.

Historic Location: The Red Room Again
A few years ago I posted a photo of the Santa Cruz Hotel as it was 100 years ago. This week I bought a postcard celebrating the creation of a cocktail lounge in the same hotel, about half a century ago. More...
