UCSC's Entrance

Yesterday, I noticed that the UC Santa Cruz sign at the base of campus looked spruced up. It just didn't get a make-over, it is an entirely new block of wood. UCSC posted an interesting story and a video.

How to Weave a Brigid's Cross

I started to wonder. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems easy enough. Here's a finished one: More...

I like this picture of me walking along the highway on the road to Glengarrif. We were nearly to the pass that separates Kerry from Cork. More...

Language

On my first day in Dublin, we walked from our house in Phibsborough ("pibs-bro") down to Temple Bar and Trinity. I didn't want to go to museums, but needed to walk around in the sun. I didn't realize I wouldn't see any sun for the rest of the week. When we eventually had a sunny day, our friend texted us: "The sun is splitting rocks here." "How was the weather?" people asked me when I returned home. "Like Portland. " Locals complained about it, but I didn't mind. Any day that I don't need to wear sunscreen is a good day for me. Plus, I knew how to dress. More...

As I put the bags in the back of the truck at the Park n Fly, I thought that every moment of the past two weeks had been delightful. Not one moment of frustration or boredom or disappointment. What to do, what to do?

I've already reached my limit with electoral politics, I mean, talking about the Republican ticket. The Democrats need to beat the voting machines, and the only way they can do that is to register more voters and turn out the vote in every precinct. In the meantime, Anne Lamott wrote something I wish I had, saying everything I wish I could say, and then much more more. Here is an excerpt, and the essay erupts with many, many more. More...

Things I Learned in Ireland

1) Never refuse an invitation for cup of tea
2) "No" doesn't really mean "no."
