There's something about a secret staircase, isn't there? Santa Cruz has several pedestrian staircases, and because they are disused by the auto-bound, and mis-used by bums, they have become examples of the in-plain-sight secret.
I decided to go visit a few today. My favorite is on from Washington Street just below the "Ramada Limited" which was once known as the Alladin Motel, over looking the wharf intersection. At the top of the old stair is a equally old cork oak.
Here's the cork oak:
The stair is chained off; I suppose it is "dangerous." Here's the view looking down from the tree: "
And here is the rest of it. The treads are stone, and look like marble.
...But nothing like the safety and efficiency of this baby that replaced it, eh?
I have more stairs to write about, but I need to make dinner now.
