What would Santa Cruz be like if people came from another place and liked what they saw here and just took over? What if any physical contact between the new people us made us sick, and most of us died? What if they took us into their part of the city and made is work for them? I think about things like that sometimes.
I think about what colonialization would look like because I want to understand what happened here in 1791, but I also because I was deeply influenced as a child by a book called The City of Gold and Lead. In that story, interplanetary aliens have conquered earth, and only children are able to effect a revolt. I learned years later that the book I read was the center of a triology, and now there is a prequel too.
"The Tripod Trilogy" is an unfortunate title. Don't let that stop you.
