A woman I know works for a non-profit for which I serve on the board of directors. She recently moved to Santa Cruz for this job. The other day I was helping to orient her to her new office, and I found an ancient fax machine we retired months ago under the desk. I made the executive decision to put it out on the street.
I bundled up the machine, put a note on it that said "Works. Free." and set it on the sidewalk outside our downtown office. I thought nothing more of it.
Last week, she told me that she was a bit surprised to see me just put a piece of office equipment on the sidewalk, but figured I knew what I was doing, and it was a Santa Cruz thing to do.
A week later, she was thinking to herself that she would like to get back into needlework, but with moving and having only a part-time job, the expense of yarn and canvas would be more than her budget could handle. But her desire was strong.
And what happened? While she was walking downtown, she found a table in front of a house with a bag on it labeled, "Free needlework." And inside were entire kits of tea towels and yarn, ready for her to get working on.
