Three reasons why BMI is not accurate

When it comes to checking the fitness as well as obesity among people, most of the medical practitioners use the BMI calculator. However, one thing which you have to keep in mind is that BMI index is not accurate at all. Due to this very reason, you have to 1st find out about the shortcomings of the BMI index. Once you discover the shortcomings, you would realize why you should use some other method to measure your fitness rather than the BMI index. We would today share with you three different reasons why you should not use the BMI index.

  1. Does not take into account the body type:

The BMI index is calculated in such a way that it assumes that the body type of every individual is the same. In reality, this is not true at all. Depending on the body type as well, someone might be considered as obese, or someone might be considered as thin. That is why, instead of just calculating based on the height as well as the weight; you have to take into account the body type of the person as well. Only when the body type of the person is taken into account, the accurate readings can be obtained as well. That is why BMI is flawed because it does not take the body type into account.

  1. Does not take muscle mass into account:

You need to understand that you can be only considered as obese if you’re having fat the position in your body. In cases of athletes as well as very fit people, the muscle mass forms a significant portion of the overall weight. However, the BMI index does not consider muscle mass differently than the normal fat which is deposited in the body. Due to this very reason, they might appear as obese when they are perfectly fit. In reality, if you want an accurate reading, whether you are obese or not, you have to eliminate the muscle mass in the body and after that look at the weight.

  1. Does not take body size into account:

You need to understand that different people have different sizes of the body. Someone can be tiny but obese and another person can be large but can be perfectly fit. This is another reason why the BMI index is faulty. If you are just assuming that the person with a smaller body size would always be thin and would never be obese, you are completely wrong. Moreover, if you’re considering a person with the larger body size as being obese, you would be wrong once again as well. That is why; instead of just looking into the theoretical calculation of obesity, you have to take into account the size of the person and the age of the person.  After that only, you would be able to take a call as to whether the person is obese or not.

So, instead of blindly believing the BMI index, it is a much better idea to look into these few points, and after that only, you would be able to understand why the BMI index is not accurate and why you should not always trust the statistics of the BMI index blindly.
