What makes me laugh
So, for example (see below), rather than sending this to a friend, I'll post this. This morning a colleague and I were discussing the UI (user interface) of a crucial application that we support. It is made by Sun, Inc, a once highly-respected computer company that grew too big and ruined itself. Eventually everyone at the university will interact with this application. We've always hated it. We encounter stupid design errors and terrible UI bugs that take months to fix. We regularly say "what a piece of shit" when trying to wrangle it into some degree of usablity for our users. Today, I IM'ed "what a piece of shit" to a colleague while we discussed an egregious lack of flexibility she had encountered. She *simulteneously* IM'ed: "piece of shit with shit for grandparents."

Malware Could Send Teacher to Prison
Yet another reason why Windows computers should not be purchased by schools. A substitute teacher is facing 40 years in prison because her malware-ridden computer displayed porn to children. Why is this even being prosecuted? What a nightmare.

My Required Photo of iPhone
There were two iPhones at MacWorld. They were hard to see because each pedestel was surrounded by people taking photos of it with their telephones. Here is my photo, taken with my point-n-shoot. More...

MacWorld Highlight
I went to that big computer show in San Francisco last week. The highlight of the show for me was a USB hub by Belkin. The hub contains a few USB ports, a few firewire ports, a fan, and an LED light. But its not the product I liked. It's the ad. More...

iPod Fan
This month's Wired magazine is worth buying even though you can read it online, I tell you what. Even if just for the excerpt from Steven Levy's book about the history of the iPod. Here's the story of how he showed it to Bill Gates the day it was released: More...

What Windows Won't Do
I found two articles that show Macintosh users like me some very cool things we didn't know, which is enough, but you can't do them with Windows either. The first article shows us fund with pdf. The second article is about scripting.

USB Disks of Terror
I love stories of social engineering, and so do most people. Stories of heros who use tricks of mind and trust and greed and curiosity to get what they want. This story is about a security company that didn't bother to use social engineering to test the vulnerability of their client. They simply scattered free USB disks--also known as "key disks" and "thumb drives" in the employee parking lot. So here's the lesson: don't attach strange stuff to your computer. You're opening yourself up to corporate terrorism.

Visions of the Net
There's a great documentary about ARPAnet at google that all the net geeks are watching. I love how visionary the founders of the Net were, especially how they got it at the very beginning that the Net is about society, not technology. More...

Anonymous Email PO Boxes
Haven't you sometimes wished that you could get an anonymous PO box just for one delivery? We can't get that now for US Mail, but mailinator is offering the use of one-time anonymous email addresses. A brilliant service with endless possibilities.

Homebrew Computer Club Anniversary
MacAddict pointed me in the direction of a few good articles published on the occassion of the 30th Anniversary of the Homebrew Computer Club. Atari Archives has the founding-of-Apple story by Woz. CNet has a page of links to videos taken at the recent Anniversary Party. Bruce Dalmer published an exhibit about the party.
