Beautiful Surf Last Sunday

I was at Seabright beach Sunday afternoon and could see swells at Steamer Lane like I have never seen before. The sea was visibly rising off the lighthouse and you could see the curls. Apparently this was an amazing day for surfing.

The Power of Forgiveness

At his arraignment, a local woman publicly forgave the man who killed her husband. He hit their car head-on. Drunk from an afternoon at the Trout Farm. Try to read this without weeping.

Harsh

Every month, the UCSC Police department publishes a crime summary (pdf). The summary for October included: "Three affiliates were arrested for misusing parking placards." ARRESTED. I can understand that if you get caught doctoring your scratch-off you'd be fined, and TAPS would tell you you can never, ever park at UCSC until the end of time. But arrested. Wow. I wonder what the story is there. This is the sort of thing that makes me dream about starting a UCSC newspaper once I'm retired. I'd be able to investigate this. I'm too dang curious.

Majority Rule

Amid the commentary on last week's passage of Prop 8, was the assertion (somewhere, don't make me look up the quote) that never before had Californians voted to remove rights for certain groups from our Constitution. This may technically true, but I know that Californians have certainly used our constitution to make some of us less equal than others. More...

Another Name for It

T.J's was packed at 5 pm. I had to park clear over at Longs. But even with the crowd, I felt jolly; I found a pretty bouquet that used a few staffs of wheat. When I stood in line, I caught the eye of a two-year-old. More...

UCSC's Entrance

Yesterday, I noticed that the UC Santa Cruz sign at the base of campus looked spruced up. It just didn't get a make-over, it is an entirely new block of wood. UCSC posted an interesting story and a video.

Farmers' Market Melee

Oh, I just love to read stories like this, especially descriptions of complaints about the farmers' market that include "playing drums with little skill." Is there truly an ordinance against that. I wish.
